Coming back from the auto mechanic this last week in South Africa, I saw a stunning bird take off from the side of the road...
It was a Lilac-breasted Roller, like the one above.
My expression went from delight to horror as I watched the beautiful bird soar too low over the road, and I heard a thump on the front of my car. Looking in my rear view mirror, I saw nothing, and wondered what happened to the bird.
45 minutes later at the South Africa/Mozambique border, the official stopped me and pointed to the grill on my car.
Reaching down, he pulled up the bird and smiled. "Thanks for lunch!" he said.
