Coming back from the auto mechanic this last week in South Africa, I saw a stunning bird take off from the side of the road...
It was a Lilac-breasted Roller, like the one above.
My expression went from delight to horror as I watched the beautiful bird soar too low over the road, and I heard a thump on the front of my car. Looking in my rear view mirror, I saw nothing, and wondered what happened to the bird.
45 minutes later at the South Africa/Mozambique border, the official stopped me and pointed to the grill on my car.
Reaching down, he pulled up the bird and smiled. "Thanks for lunch!" he said.
My mom is visiting!
